Discussion: 2011 season Print
Thursday, 16 September 2010 00:00

The season 2010 will be over soon, and it will be time for NRF to work on 2011.
Women, Men and Juniors have been more active than ever before. The NRF claims a 40% increase in 2010. But it would be good to know what you think.

So please tell us:

  • what worked fine,
  • what could be improved and how,
  • what need to be changed, and what is your suggestion

Do you have new ideas to bring or suggestions to make?

Soon, turneringsutvalg will start working on the 2011 competitions, and as a player, parent, or rugby friend... Norgesrugby might be the only place where your opinion is asked and where you can express yourself freely.

Thanks to norgesrugby.no to give the opportunity to everybody to give his/her opinion on the national championships (women, men and juniors), in order to make the 2011 even better.

I hope that all clubs will organize debate to give the chance to all rugby fellows to express their opinion.

Vincent (NRF, Turneringsutvalg leder)

First: the NRF claims of 40% increase has nothing to do with activites, that's just fixing numbers on papers to generate more income to NRF. If we relate our plans and activities to those numbers (1500+), we'll continue to fail in our development.

Our plans should be based on the real numbers we find on grass, i.e. on how many rugby players we actually are. That's somewhere between 250 and 300 I guess, including men, women and juniors.

We have very few teams able to play 15s games throughout the whole season, as all the forfeited games prove. We must realize we're a developing country and set up our plans and schedules for the best of our development. The goal must be to have as much game time as possible for as many players as possible. The only way of doing it is to have more regional games for smaller teams. If we have more 10s tournaments, more teams are able to join, and the bigger clubs can put up two or more teams each. The recruitment process will become easier for everyone

Just few figures:

last year: men 15s game: 12 games, regional men 10s: 5 events, women 15s: 0, women 7s: 1 national event, junior: 1 national event

this year: men 15s: 26 (+5 forfeits), regional men 10s: 0. women 15s: 4 games, women 7s: 4 national events, junior: 2 national events, about 10 regional events

so I think it about 60-70% increase in activity.

I agree that we are a developping country, this year 10s tournaments (regional and national) didn't work, mainly because of a lack of commitment, it is something to consider and improve for next year.

What about 2 divisions: Div1 (Top3 2010) and Div2 (Bottom 3 2010).

Every year the last of Div1 goes to payoff (home and away) against the 1st of Div2.

That's 4 games (2 away) per teams + 1 or 2 games.

Example for 2011:
Div 1 Oslo, Stavanger, Bergen
Div 2 Trondheim, Sunnmore, OSI.
At the end of the 6 games

PLAYOFF - Winner goes to Div 1 next year
1st Div 2 vs 3rd Div 1 (This game first)
3rd Div 1 vs 1st Div 2 (This game second)

MATCH FOR THE 5TH PLACE
2nd Div2 vs 3rd Div2

FINAL - Winner is NM 15s Champion
1st Div 1 vs 2nd Div1

I think it is a good idea to consider Pierre.

The NM15s could be played august-september-october

and during spring we could have a Men National 7s series

and organize regional 15s championship like the Bergen League at the moment, create an "East Coast league" with ORK, OSI, and Tønsberg so clubs can play some 15s during spring with almost no travel cost

and a 10s league with Sunnmøre, Trondheim, Verdal for the North part, as Trondheim is the only one to be able to play 15s in this area

And Bergen League already exists

I think it is a good example of what can be done locally, it gives game time to many players, and there are no travel cost.

Parts of the season should be defined as "Regional games" and leave it up to the regions to find a format that suites them. A dynamic number of players is good for the lesser teams. If a team only got 9 players, they can play 9 vs 9, or more if they can/want to borrow players from the other team.
BTW, Fredrikstad plans to join the 15s league next year. We don't mind having two divisions (and joining the second), but the 15s games should not take up most of the grass season on behalf of more development-related 7s/10s/12s regional games.
