Discussion: What future for women's Rugby in Norway Print
Wednesday, 08 September 2010 18:00

with 4 clubs, and about 80 players total in the country, what is the best that women's rugby can get. Is there a crisis? How can it be developed?

---

Bergen BSI and Oslo RK seems to grow when the other two struggle. Why is that?
Can Norway reach the world cup as Sweden did this year...? Can Norway go to the Olympics?

Thanks Pierre.

Would be great to get some feedback regarding this as we are planning a meeting. Please comment away!

As with any sport, you need to focus on development for juniors and kids. You can't have a steady recruitment of women players before you have a pool of young girls eager to grow up to become players for their senior team.
Dreaming of World Cup and Olympics are just a waste of time before we have lots of girl's teams playing games on a regular basis.

I agree that the focus must be on the development of junior teams to gain interest as well as make people aware of rugby as a sport. I didn't know about rugby before I went to the UK for uni. As to how it would be possible to publicise rugby as a sport I am unsure, but I know facebook is a very good tool as well as all kind of publicity on the web. However, I think it would be a good thing to attempt to establish 15's teams as well. Though 7's and 10's is easier to establish teams for number-wise, I found 15's is a friendlier game to learn. The previous 2 are so fast paced that they demand good knowledge of the game. I found that 15's offered more in the ways of teaching and learning the phases of the game as well as technical aspects. If it comes across as an easier and less intimidating game to learn it might help for recruitment as well. Hope this makes sense!
