Discussion: Schedule for the 2011 season Print
Saturday, 30 October 2010 00:00

After some changes due to the late withdraw of Fredrikstad RK, please find enclosed the schedule for the 2011 season.

The season is arranged as follows:

- Until 21st of May, 4 regional 7s/10s (or even 15s) regional tournament/event are planned. Here is a suggestion for team attending these tournament:

  • Oslofjord area: Oslo RK, OSI Rugby, UMBI/Ås, Fredrikstad RK and Horten RK
  • South west area: Stavanger RK, Revheim RK and Flekkefjord RK
  • West area: Bergen league
  • North west: Sunnmøre RK, Trondheim RK/NTNUi, Verdal RK and Fosen RK

Team attending NM15s MUST attend these tournaments, or they will be penalised by -2 points for each tournament they'll miss (we call that the "solidarity sanction"). We need to have the best clubs attending these regional tournaments to ensure a good quality and help the smalls clubs to developp. It may be as well financial sanction.

- NM15s is starting on 21st of May. It has been some sligths changes to try to improve things.

Teams are still split in two geographical pool:

  • west: Stavanger RK, Bergen RK and Sunnmøre RK
  • east: Oslo RK, OSI Rugby and Trondheim RK/NTNUi

Each team will play on a home and away basis team from the SAME pool. And also play team from the OTHER pool on just 1 game.

Then the 2 first team of each pool will qualify for the semi-final being played on a home and away basis, team being ranked 1st of pool hosting the 1st game.

Final will be hosted by the team highly ranked after pool games.

We will keep offensive bonus point, and defensive one will be introduced.

Exact game schedule will be arranged to make it as fair as possible for everbody.

I remind you that you are free to play game on other dates, you just need to have agreement of both clubs.

- NM7s will be on the 25 and 26th June in Stavanger or Bergen which candidated to host the 2011 NM7s.

- Women rugby:

  • Norges Cup damer 7s: in Spring 3 events
  • Norges Cup Damer 10s: in Autumn 2 events

- Junior rugby: I'm still working on it, I think there is no hurry as we can be more flexible with juniors than we are with seniors.

You have until 20th November to send me any comments. See the draft schedule here.

Some initial comments after reading through the men's schedule.

* I like the general layout of the 15's season. Everybody gets to play everybody.

* Sanctions (solidarity or financial) should be avoided in general. What about encouraging teams instead?

* Personally I think the must play limit, the forfeit limit and no-borrowed-players rules this season did not work as well as intended. What about these rules in 2011?

* 5 regional tournaments in total. Two in april (one before Easter), two in May and one in june. In april there aren't many pitches available (not in Trondheim, at least). In june the 15's season has focus. Isn't it a bit ambitious to make all these mandatory?

* I miss an optional "wooden spoon"-final

* "I remind you that you are free to play game on other dates, you just need to have agreement of both clubs."
My question is: What dates?
If we assume that international matches and summer break will prevent teams from playing, all weekends are pretty much booked except sep 24th...

What about the NM 10's ?
That's usually great fun and it's a real shame that it had been cancelled this year.
NM 7's and NM 10's are the two only week-ends where the whole norwegian rugby family can be together.
Since the NM 7's is going to happen in the West (Bergen or Stavanger), I suggest NM 10's to be organized in the East.

As Sølve wrote, it's very uncertain that tournaments in mid-April will happen in the West...
1st of may is usually the psychological barrier for Bergen Kommunen.

Please also consider games held during vacation times, like the 17th May. The away team is at a disadvantage here, because of other commitments etc.

Cheers

There are few issues with this schedule that need to be cleared up.
Just a couple to start with: I thought that maybe the organisers would have learnt a lesson from this years final, I guess not, as the date for the final is late in October again.
Home and away games for semi finals is a joke. This is not soccer! There isn't any reward for coming first or second!
More to come...

My comments to the Turneringsutvalg sent by email:

I support the idea of having more 10s and less 15s. The 15s doesn’t seem to develop Norwegian rugby at all, just the same ex-pats dominated teams (apart from Sunnmøre) that get more time having fun together.

Since we’re a developing rugby country, we should focus on developing formats, and I think 10s are the way to go. There should be more weekends set up for regional 10s tournament, and they should culminate in an NM 10s. And the tournaments should be in the grass season and avoiding school holidays

Problem is that these regional 10's tournaments take up a whole day. Having regular tournaments can be difficult for many guys when you consider work and family committments.
Plus im sure there are many guys like me who don't really care for 7's or 10's as it isn't really rugby. I wouldn't give up a whole day to play 10's or 7's...

This illustrates my point very well. Most players don't care for the future of Norwegian rugby as long as they can have fun today. That's why NRF should be making guidelines for the Turneringsutvalg to set up a development friendly season.

That's weird Lars. I can't see anywhere in my last comment that talks about not caring about the future of Norwegian rugby. You may have missed my point altogether...There is more than enough travel time and money being used at the moment for 15's. Increasing time away from home with several regional tournaments (that will use a whole saturday) will be very hard for many older guys to commit to when they have a family and work to consider.
A balance needs to found for everyones needs. The older guys need and want 15's.
Obviously development needs to be put in place to increase playing numbers in Norway. 10's is probably a good way to develop youth in our sport.

This will always be the discussion in Norway, the developing teams wanting more gametime that suits the amount of players they have (7s/10s) and developed teams wanting more proper games (15s).

Lars: How you can say that the 15s does not develop norwegian rugby? The last national game was played with 21 of 22 players based in Norway, 8 of which are born norwegians.

My solution:
set up a 10s league (not tournament) where developing teams play each other (4x15min games).

Keep the 15s league.

Play friendlies with developing teams and developed teams, where the developed teams help out with players.

Forcing teams to play tournaments they dont want to play is no solution.

Lars: I find it disrespectful that you say that "most players don't care for the future of norwegian rugby..." There are alot of people around the different cities that do alot of work for norwegian rugby!!
